Each year on August 28, the city of Groningen commemorates the siege of Groningen in 1672 by Bernard van Galen, Bishop of Munster. The siege lasted nearly a month. Carl von Rabenhaupt led the defense of the Groningen.
On August 28, the mayor of Groningen, accompanied by the child mayor of Groningen, lay a wreath at the bust of Von Rabenhaupt. The ceremony is highlighted by a group of reenactors and a salute is given in memory to the men that defended the city. Throughout the day, festivities take place on several locations near the city center. One of the activities are dragon boat races in the canals.
